How great is it to live in a city where you can come within 5 feet of meerkats, gibbons, lemurs, and tigers? We took advantage of the Natural Science Center's free day (the first Wed of every month, from 1-5) this month, and we really lucked out! The animals really chose that afternoon to show off! Most of the primates were either swinging around or up close, the male tiger was pacing very close, and when we swung back by, the female tiger was out and wanted to play (see video). This was also the first time I had seen the giant anteater and the maned wolves walking around. Proof is in the pictures - my camera is a point and shoot with decent but not super-zoom ability. We didn't get there in time to pet the animals at the petting zoo (you know, the "ship" (sheep), the "ba ba" (bok bok meaning chickens), and the "ehhehehehh" (neigh for horse)), but we did get to see the pretend "moo". We had a great afternoon!
This video does not give justice to how loud the tigers' roar is. It made us jump, and it even elicited a "holy s***" from Robyn, who you can hear in the background reassuring Maddox that it is ok. Their loud roars even got the howler monkeys to start carrying on from across the park! It is quite the humbling experience to see these huge beasts so close to you (chain link fence!) and to hear how powerful their "play" roars are!
