Turning 2 at the Zoo!

We tried this idea for Isabella's 2nd birthday but the weather didn't cooperate so we went just as a family instead (see below). Yesterday we celebrated Bailey's birthday at the zoo and had a lot of fun, even though it was insanely crowded!

We were joined by Nana and Grandbob, the Fortins, and Laura and Olivia. The 4 year olds really hit it off and spent most of the day running around together.

Isabella in her tutu again!?!? Shocker!

Bailey making her debut into the world of the 2 year old. And boy is she a typical 2 year old, stubborn, independent, and loves the word NO!

Mmmm, lion cupcakes! Sorry Kirstin, I don't have a funny story to go along with these - they are easier and way less freakish than the duck cupcakes! :) However, here is a tip for anyone who might want to make them - the icing will make the toppings soggy. I decorated them the night before and by lunchtime the next day, all the adults were picking off the soggy popcorn, pretzels, and cookies. The kids didn't seem to care though!

The girls were all excited to visit the dinosaur exhibit at the zoo. Now we've been to the one at the Durham Life and Science, the one at the coliseum, and this one, which was my favorite. The dinosaurs were animatronic (except for this T-Rex) like the ones at the coliseum but they were outside, so less noisy and overstimulating. If you have a kid who is into dinosaurs, I do recommend this exhibit. It runs through October, and does cost a little extra over regular admission, but I thought it was worth it.

Looking waaaay up at the brachiosaurus

If you grew up going to the zoo, you probably have fond (well, they're fond to me because I always remember going when it's really hot, and those were a wonderful way to cool off!) memories of the air vents in the aviary. Isabella discovered that they're extra fun when you're wearing a skirt

Oh I sooo hate that I had to work!! And I'm glad (for you) that the cupcakes were less dramatic than last year... I really think that cupcake post is one of my all time favorites! I still laugh thinking about it!
