The Little Narrator

Isabella is turning into such a little narrator. What is she narrating? The story of her life, of course. She talks almost constantly, usually to something or someone. She is really into playing with her animals and Baby, and she is always telling them what they are doing, stopping to ask them questions. "Sheep, wanna read this book now sheep? Yeah? Kaaay" "Dinosaur, go in truck to Nana and Grandbobs? Yeah? Kaaaaay." "Pushin shoppin cart Mommy, pushin shoppin cart!" "Baby, need diaper dupange (change)? Yeah? Need cweeem? Yeah? Mommy, need wipes, Baby need wipes Mommy!" She is too funny!

She also surprises us with her verbal memory and repetition abilities. She will be quiet in the back seat while we are talking and all of a sudden she is repeating something we said. The funniest was the other day when I tried to put her in her carseat. Unbeknownst to me, there was a hard plastic toy in her seat so she kept struggling, and after Nick pointed it out to me, I was telling him "I had no idea, here I am thinking, Isabella, what's your problem!?!" And then I apologized to her and removed the toy. As I was strapping her in, she starts saying "What's your problem? What's your problem? What's your problem?" That made me laugh harder than I have in a long long time. One of her favorite books lately is called Starry Safari and she has been repeating phrases from it such as "screeech! Buffalo!" and "the great safari ranger" that also crack me up.

She is also turning into quite the shopper. She loves to go to the gwocewy store and Target. And when we are done, she wants to go to "another store". She is also determining what we "need" to buy. If she is not in a shopping cart, she is grabbing things off the shelf and saying "need this". The other day we were trying to use up some of our FlexBenefits money and as we were determining which products to buy, Isabella was busy filling up our basket with all kinds of things that we "needed". We turned around to find a basket full of asprin, laxatives, and eye drops. Interesting choices little one, but appropriate since they were on eye level shelving!

She is also showing a preference for "new ones". Which has the potential to lead to trouble. We can't be buying "new ones" of everything all the time...

One of my favorite times of the day is right before I put her down for bed. In the past 2 years she has gone from nursing to sleep to singing one lullaby to singing the song of Isabella's choosing (which often included me making up songs) to talking. She rarely wants a song anymore, but we just sit in the rocking chair in the dark and she tells me about her day (or what we did the past couple of days). She also talks about her friends at school, even though she hasn't seen them in 2 weeks. It is so fun for me to sit there and listen to how she processes life. I find child development fascinating, and she is at a very interesting stage!

Today is the last glorious day of Winter Break and Isabella and I celebrated by staying in our jammies all day! This is the first day all break that she has not changed out of her jammies between waking up in the morning and going down for her afternoon nap. We have had a great time together. I have to admit, I was worried about it at the beginning, but naptime has gone smoothly, which has made all the difference in the world! We had to do a lot of shopping the first week so we stayed busy but we have also spent lots of good time with Daddy, as well as Nana, GrandBob, and Grandpa John. We have not gone to the park due to all the snow and rain but we have been able to spend some time outside. We have gone to the library and the pool, and most memorably for her, the Natural Science Center. That was Tuesday and she is still talking about the animals we saw and what they were doing. We need to go back there more often, as she really loves it.

The next big "agenda item" (can you tell I am going back to work tomorrow and am getting in the mindset?) for Isabella is the transition into a big girl bed! I am completely scared because she is such a good sleeper at night and once we put her down, she usually puts herself to sleep easily, and sleeps about 12 hours, rarely waking up in the middle of the night. I just hope she continues to sleep pretty well in her new bed. We bought the bed and an adorable comforter (a safari animal theme but with enough pink (well, a lot of pink) to make it girly) and both should be arriving sometime this week. I want to let her get back into the regular routine before we start the process (ie I am going to try to wait as long as possible before Nick makes me do it!).

I was a little worried about 2 weeks off messing up her routine but I think she will be just fine going back to school tomorrow. It will be hard for all of us to get out of bed before 8:00 (yes, I know some of you are jealous that Isabella routinely sleeps in until 8:00!) and get back to the grind, but it has to be done. At least we will all get out of this house - the cold cold weather has been keeping us inside these past few days, and it is NOT going to get warmer any time soon.

Shame on me for posting without a picture! I will post 2 pics of Isabella with her vacuum cleaner, which she is a fan of! (Because I'm lazy, I am putting them in a new post). Isabella has been really engaged with household tasks lately. Hopefully it is not just a phase; hopefully she has inherited her Daddy's "clean genes", because I sure don't have any, and I know he would appreciate some help around here! She loves helping me load and unload the dishwasher, take her dishes to the sink, throw things in the trash/recycling, and clean up her toys, yes, clean up her toys!!!
